How to choose an education recruitment agency in London

A practical guide for schools and educators: what to look for, the questions to ask, and how to compare London education recruitment agencies before you commit.

There are hundreds of education recruitment agencies in London, and they are not all the same. Whether you are a school looking for reliable staff or an educator looking for your next role, choosing the right agency makes a real difference. Here is how to tell them apart.

What to look for

  • Safeguarding and compliance. This is non-negotiable. Look for agencies audited to an independent, education-specific standard such as APSCo Compliance+, that recruit in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), and that complete enhanced DBS checks, references, right to work and identity checks before anyone starts. Schools can also check whether an agency is an approved supplier on the government's framework for supply teachers and education recruitment (the GCA RM6376 framework).
  • Genuine specialism and fit. An agency that knows your phase or need — primary, secondary, SEN and SEND, alternative provision, further education — will match people who actually fit, not just whoever is available.
  • Independent, verifiable reviews. Look for published ratings and a high Net Promoter Score (NPS) from real schools and educators, not vague claims. Check Google, Trustpilot and other independent review platforms.
  • Relationships and responsiveness. The best agencies are consultative — they take time to understand you, communicate clearly, and stay in touch long after a placement starts, rather than pushing CVs and disappearing.
  • Transparent costs. Fees and rates should be clear and explained up front, with no hidden charges.
  • Local knowledge. An agency with real London borough knowledge understands the schools, the travel and the market.

Questions to ask before you commit

  • What compliance standards are you audited to, and how often?
  • Can you share independent reviews and your NPS?
  • Do you specialise in the phase or role I need?
  • Who will be my point of contact, and how quickly do you respond?
  • How are your fees and rates structured, in writing?
  • What happens after a placement starts — what aftercare do you provide?

How to compare agencies fairly

Compare agencies against the same role, location and contract terms — not just headline rates. A slightly higher fee from an agency with rigorous compliance, strong reviews and genuine aftercare is usually better value than the cheapest option. Shortlist two or three, ask the questions above, and see who actually listens.

Red flags to avoid

  • Vague answers on safeguarding or compliance.
  • No independent reviews, or reviews you cannot verify.
  • Pressure to commit quickly without clear terms.
  • Generalist agencies with no real education specialism.
